West Side Trails: SaMo. Mtns.
Sullivan Canyon (Above Brentwood)
Commentary: Start at the top of the hill. pleasant hike downhill looping back uphill using the evil narrow staircase <grin>...tho it's one thing just to find the friggin steps, quite another to take it to the top. (whose bright idea was that anyway?!!?) run it if u can. work those calves. (smokers beware!) stop and enjoy the view (b/c u know u'll be gasping for air).

Temescal Loop Trail (Pacific Palisades off Sunset)
Commentary: This trail also covers the waterfall trail below. With a little perseverence on your part, you might just get to the top and see some of l.a.'s most spectacular city and ocean views. Fortunately for the short of breath, someone was kind enough to put a nice long log that doubles as a bench or rest area (phew). It's not much longer to the top after that. Downhill's pretty much a winding dirt road but with tunnels of trees in certain parts. Follow the "Sunset" trail signs downl and avoid the "Bienvenida" (sp?) signs as that trail will lead you further west on Sunset Blvd.

Temescal Waterfall Trail (Pacific Palisades off Sunset)
Commentary: Nice rest/stretch area by the trickling waterfall (it's by no means niagara). Flow varies depending on the season. Small bridge. If you cross the bridge and follow the trail, it brings you to the Temescal Loop Trail on the north side…roughly 0.8 mile hike uphill to beautiful ocean views.

Franklin Canyon Hastain Trail (Above Beverly Hills)
Commentary: ...take the wide dirt trail up the hill through its twists and turns. u'll pass boxes of bee colonies a couple times along the trail (stop at your own risk). u can climb the small rocks at the first view point overlooking century city or twist around the trail to the top of the mountain. (either way, the view is spectacular...even when smothered by smog). once at the very top, take a breather. stretch. apply sunscreen (or get burned)...(more...)

Franklin Canyon Chernoff/Ranch Trails (Above Beverly Hills)
Commentary: ...along the chernoff trail, you'll enjoy the serenity of the lake (where we were told the andy griffith show was filmed back in the yesteryears). this trail surrounds the lake. if u park at the lot at the entrance of franklin canyon, walk along the same paved road that led you to the lot going southbound as it forks to the right. you'll be along the right side of the lake. u'll quickly approach Heavenly Pond which is just next to the half-way point of the lake. (more...)
