commentary:
ok, i wouldn't call this hollywood and it's not the valley nor is it exactly the west side, but that's where i've put it, the west side. it's west of laurel canyon just above beverly hills and has great views of century city. you'll also see views of ridiculously large living quarters of the rich 'n' famous where their guest homes are mini-mansions in and of themselves. take the wide dirt trail up the hill through its twists and turns. u'll pass boxes of bee colonies a couple times along the trail (stop at your own risk). u can climb the small rocks at the first view point overlooking century city and the reservoir to take a breather and enjoy the view or follow the trail which makes a sharp bend to the left leading u to the top of the mountain. (either way, the view is spectacular...even when smothered by smog). once at the very top, inhale. stretch. apply sunscreen. sip your water. u can take the same wide trail back down or if u're wearing long socks and/or pants of some sort and prefer a steeper, more adventurous descent down the hill, then take the optional trail (can't miss it from the top). run it if u can but do slow down at the steep points as they are a tad bit slippery. most hikers take the same trail back down...but we didn't. the steeper trail is also a short cut down the hill. it doesn't exactly let you off right at the main trail, but close enough so long as you don't mind jumping a few feet or butt-scaling the dirt to get down--scratches, cuts and bruises notwithstanding...be careful.
address:
Franklin Canyon Park
city:
Above Beverly Hills
state:
CA
directions:
From Sunset in Beverly Hills, go north on North Beverly Drive which turns into Coldwater Canyon Avenue. Go left as Coldwater joins Mulholland Drive and at the intersection of Coldwater Canyon and Franklin Canyon, turn left. Go 0.5 mi to the parking lot by the William O. Douglas Outdoor Classroom. the entire franklin trail is about 5.5 mi but if u're just doing the hastain trail, then keep driving southbound past the entrance of franklin trail, past the lake, and past the abandoned lone house on the street. the hastain trailhead is the first stop on the left. u'll see a little sign next to the trail entrance gate.
restrictions:
none (that I know of) though I assume you can't bring weapons and firearms.
