commentary:
this is actually part of the santa monica mountains. the waterfall trail is pretty much a consistent elevation throughout until u get to the rocks. there used to be four ropes at four different parts of the trail near the waterfall, but two of the ropes have been slashed (for safety reasons to prevent people from climbing them). that said, however, people still climb them. the first former rope area is a smaller rock maybe 5ft high. it's very slippery w/out the rope so be careful if you choose to climb it. if you slip, you'll fall into the shallow stream. ouch. the next rope area is right next to the waterfall, but u must first cross the shallow stream (when there's water in it). so u'll get your feet wet, but it's a thrill to complete the climb. the rock is about 10ft high. the rope was cut shorter but is still being used to climb the rock. if you climb it, just remember to keep your feet flat on the rock and hold on for dear life! (it's not that bad, but i'm not suggesting you do it either.) the choice is yours. just when u think u're home free, u're faced with having to climb the slippery narrow 4ft log wedged against the cracks to scale still more rocks (but much smaller). use your hands and arms as leverage should u choose to go up the log. so now u've completed that much. low n behold, there's yet another rope to climb! yikes. this time u can choose between the thin but durable purple rope on the right or the fat rope on the left. <whispering: purple purple>. needless to say, we chose purple. hmmmm. we got up alright (it's even higher and more narrow than the ten footer), but then again, we had two very nice guys (jeff and jeff) spot us at the bottom and top. bringing a strong friend is highly recommended. bring two. bring three. the more, the merrier. so now u've completed all the ropes. feel invincible, u deserve it. we, on the other hand, ventured to our left and found another interesting rock that was fair game. not the smartest move as it had no rope, but hey, jen and cat made it to the top. (can't say i did.) once we reached the end of the trail and had to turn back, we were faced with getting down the same rocks we climbed. the mind simply doesn't register a safety factor (unless you're fearless or experienced). suggestion: get over it. u gotta get back. again, keep feet flat against the rocks. trust your feet. personally, i thought going down was easier than going up the rope. beginners could do it and while successful, remember there's always the danger factor...<sigh> have someone spot u at the bottom in case u lose your grip, your step or your mind!
