Campbell, California - September 19, 2001 - Compression Science, a company with a world-renowned technology team developing next-generation digital video encoding and decoding technology, announced today that it has named Celso Azevedo as chief executive officer (CEO). In this role, Azevedo will be responsible for the overall management of the company. Azevedo also joins the company's board of directors. "With a tremendous technology already in place, we needed a CEO with the industry knowledge, international experience and leadership skills to lead this company forward," said Garrett Cecchini, founder of Compression Science. "Celso has more than 30 years of experience and success in these areas and his track record of taking companies from start-up status to positions of leadership is incredibly well-matched to the needs of Compression Science. We feel confident that Celso will help Compression Science solidify its leadership as a solutions provider enabling commercial broadcasting customers to dramatically reduce bandwidth and storage costs without compromising quality." Prior to joining Compression Science, Azevedo served as the CEO of Astrolink International, a global broadband internet-over-satellite venture, where he helped raise more than $1.3 billion, structured the company, built multi-functioning global teams and managed relationships with investors and employees. Prior to this Azevedo was the senior vice president at DirectTV International at Hughes Electronics where he played a key role in the growth of DirectTV Latin America and DirecTV Japan. Before this, Azevedo served as chairman of the management committee of SES/Astra, where he helped lead the company from start-up to its position as the leader in the burgeoning European direct-to-home satellite television business. Azevedo's early career included senior positions at the International Telecommunications Union (Switzerland) and EMBRATEL (Brazil). "I was very impressed with the technology team at Compression Science and the solutions they are developing to help commercial broadcasters reduce bandwidth without sacrificing digital video quality," said Celso Azevedo, CEO of Compression Science. "In addition, the technology is readily scaleable to the high definition television, emerging Internet, wireless and consumer electronics markets, meaning the market size and potential is quite large. It is exciting to be part of a company that has developed real answers to real problems and has the vision for doing more. I look forward to leading the Compression Science team as we deliver these next-generation solutions to our customers worldwide." About Compression Science ### If you would like to
